ASOMI is associated with various activities that is related to providing humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable population in the region of Assam. ASOMI’s Health initiative programme has assess the health need of many deprived sections of the society and collected sufficient amount of data regarding their physical health & well-being and this data reflects the lack of hygiene awareness and requirement of proper and safe drinking water and sanitation across Assam.

Assam is still dependent on water from rain, streams and rivers for drinking and other domestic and agricultural purposes. These sources have proven to be unsafe. Access to safe drinking water and the status of sanitation & hygiene in Assam is substantially less than the national average. The population in Assam with access to safe drinking water is only 77.55% compared to the all India figure of 88% (the same is 84% in rural areas and 95% in urban areas) while the total sanitation coverage (rural plus urban) in India is 18% and in Assam 15.89%. The unhygienic situation and practices used by the disadvantage section of the society have caused heavy pollution of the available water sources, soil and the air. It is a matter of concern that many people suffer from various diseases, mostly water-borne diseases originate in and enter the human body on account of lack of access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation facility. Thus, Sanitation and safe water utilization are important issues having global concern today.

ASOMI, abide by the norms of holistic, sustainable development of the individual and guided by its vision, is marching forward to set realistic targets, develop achievable action plans, and allocate the financial and human resources needed to bring safe drinking water and basic sanitation to the populations of Assam, in a sustainable manner, while protecting the basic needs of poor and vulnerable people. This effort must be made, not only for humanitarian reasons, but also because it is highly cost-effective, reduces health costs enormously, and is directly related to health, equity and economic growth, which are prerequisites for poverty alleviation.
