Asomi vision is to "Endeavour for creating a self-sustained habitat with secure livelihood for the poor and the disadvantage section of the society with the perspective of living in harmony with nature and one another."

Genesis

It wasn't very long ago that Assam was considered a land of plenty and its people prosperous. Come spring, merry music and songs of love would rent the air. There was fulfillment and contentment to be seen all around. In contrast to what may seem like an idyll, the situation today is a grim one. Changes in the economic environment and lack of adequate employment avenues have brought about a fall in the general standard of living. The stark reality is that poverty grips half of the populace; concern for the next meal occupies the mind of every second man. A sense of deprivation has crept in among the masses. Unfortunately, our educated youth have been the worst affected and the resulting frustration has some dangerous socio-economic implications.

Studies undertaken by different experts have all recognized certain fundamental factors. These are: lack of income or of resources, lack of coping capacity, lack of basic human capabilities, lack of proper institutional protection etc. In a macro sense, it is a combination of economic, social and political deprivation. To wean away the youth from the path of disillusionment and to bring about a positive change in the lives of the people is no mean task. But this is an effort that requires general participation and not just of the Government. Against this backdrop, a few professionals and researchers decided to create an organization called Asomi about five years back with the goal of bringing about a positive change in the lives of the people they touch.
